Especially for a Really late in my 50's guy who graduated Del City back in 1977.

A good friend and I used to run the roads around Draper from about '75 to '80 or so. The "Crybaby bridge" you speak of has an interesting but not haunted history. The bridge used East of Sooner on SE 134, before Sooner was rerouted and enlarged. At that time, it was still a 2 lane road. The bridge, was in pretty bad shape back then, and during that time, road maintenance by especially of the old one lane wooden bridges took a back seat. The few that still stood near Draper were pretty rickety in the mid 70's and most were closed or gone by '82 or so.

There was also a bridge just West of Midwest Blvd on SE 119, that had collapsed.

Anyhow, in the creekbed below the named bridge, there was an old abandoned VW that was the source of the story. The reality was that it had been stolen and abandoned. It basically stayed in the creek for a number of years.

The "Witching" story came from around the time OKC was acquiring property on the West side of Draper Lake for the proposed Elm Creek expansion that never came. The city had bought out most of the properties along 119th and 134th the owners had been by that time all vacated. I remember visiting the area before the city closed off access to 134th near the lake . There were still several standing but abandoned farms and small houses Generally between Douglas and Air Depot. People complained it was "Creepy" and felt they were being watched.

Well, it did have a surreal feeling due to the empty houses and the unique quietness of the area. At some point, people were visiting an empty house on the North side of the street and either vandalizing or dumping trash. There were complaints of a witches coven in the area due to some dead animals being found. At that point, There were still a few landowners that were getting fed up with it and would investigate anyone driving down the road they did not know.

If your readers are interested, they should search "crybaby bridge" on google and follow the links to sites that mention the Oklahoma Bridges. See for example "the LostOgle" 10 spookiest spots. I had walked the length of the road itself going east to west, seen an older but relatively updated dilapidated home on the right side just past the gate. Further down, on the left side, observed what appeared to be an old foundation etc. Then finally arrived at the bridge. As stated, old steel truss rotting planks etc. Called the wife an the had driven all the way around to meet me on the west side of the bridge. I noted the pipe you spoke of, as well as the other debris etc. At no time did I feel anything eerie, hear no noises etc. It was a very calm day with slight breeze. I did note several ticks on my pants legs from the walk down the road. Satisfied with what was observed we decided to come back at midnite an stay for a few hours to hear or see anything. Upon our return we had cameras rolling, recorders going, an pictures with flash was being taken. Of course nothing was captured at this location. One key to the set up of the story was that driving very slow on this bridge caused it to creek and groan as it was metal frame and wood plank construction. It was nearly 50 yards long so as your car or truck creeped to the middle, both you and your date grew a bit edgy just from the rickety sounds alone. When you begin to weave the tale of the witch or woman who lost her baby, roll your windows down if they were not already to increase the fear. Then of course you would yell "Witch, I've got your baby"... and listen quietly. Undoubtedly, there would be cicadas, bridge noises, owls, even sometimes crows cawing. Usually it didn't take long for your date to scream go, then of course you let the throttle rip and tires spin, which probably resulted in most of the danger that was occurring at the time. Scope out the area in the day. Map it, record wind, temps, and note water channel direction and flow, all contribute to sounds in the dark. This is what my research team did. What we found was a drain pipe that 'sang' as wind passed over its opening.MARILYN A. I'd really like to go back with equipment to see if we can get some kind of proof.. I honestly believe that there is something there..Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8792279168371280687.post-35453491830174681622015-07-30T03:05:53.930-07:002015-07-30T03:05:53.930-07:00Thanks for the comment. It is apparently urban legend and an example of 'if it looks spooky then it must be haunted.' Anyone with any hard and fast facts is encouraged to set the record straight and provide some solid foundation. Otherwise, it appears to be an example of the way urban legend and folklore in general tends to travel with people and be adopted into new locations.MARILYN A. It was given the name due to belief that a witch, who lived across the bridge, would lure children to her house and kill them. It's said that if you go at "the witching hour" (midnight on a full moon), you can hear the cries of the children. At least that's what people where I live say.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8792279168371280687.post-15948354455144099122010-10-29T16:52:19.332-07:002010-10-29T16:52:19.332-07:00This comment has been removed by a blog administrator.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
